New Healthcare Bill Provides Funding for Abstinence Education
Washington, DC (March 23, 2010) — Bipartisan efforts by the National Abstinence Education Association(NAEA) to secure funding for abstinence education were successfully included in the new Healthcare Bill signed today by President Obama. 250 million dollars from 2010-through 2014 will be available to all states through the Title V funding stream. “We are encouraged that funding will continue so that the important sexual health message of risk avoidance will reach American teens”, noted Valerie Huber, Executive Director of the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA).
The Healthcare Bill provides considerably more for Comprehensive Sex Education programs. “The dual approach to sex education funding can help states and communities offer parents and schools real “choice” when it comes to the type of sex education they want for their children and should be a sound public policy consideration in further appropriations” added Huber.
A recent research study showing the effectiveness of abstinence education underscores the need for single-focused programs. Huber noted that “In facing the complex problem of teen sex, we must not limit solutions, we must support what works and continue to find even more effective ways of reaching our youth”, NAEA will continue working to that end”.
